JESUSBONES 69: 1.What’s the name of your band? Have you changed the band’s name before?
LSDiablo or L.S. Diablo...depends on how we're feeling at the time. And no, that is the only name we've ever had.
JESUSBONES 69: 2. Please list the name, and respective instrument of each band member.
Riley Hull-Guitar and Vocals
Aaron Goff-Guitar and Vocals
Brad Hull-Bass and Vocals
Paul Marshall- Drums and Drink
JESUSBONES 69: 3. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
I'd say the genre is primarily Thrash Metal...I'm sure if we tried hard enough we could sub-categorize it into one of the million different genres, but that would take to long and be stupid.
Influences:
Brad- Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Metallica mostly
Aaron-Lamb of God, Dream Theater, Michael Jackson, Back Street Boys (yeah, I know. weird, huh?)
Riley- Jim Morrison, the Doors, probably me (Brad), and Aaron
Pauly- Everything literally. He likes it all
JESUSBONES 69: 4. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
Well, as YOU know, Riley is my son so we've known each other quite a while. We met Aaron after I heard him in this band over here in Spokane called Catacomb. I remember Riley bitching about how he would never find another guitar player to jam with that was on his level. He was really bummed for several months, and I stumbled across this tune/band on myspace. I played it for Riley and said, "There's your guy". It took a couple of months to track him down and I think Riley tried to join Catacomb, but they were stupid and gave the gig to some other dude before even letting him try out. He was totally bummed then, but about a month later they kicked Aaron out. We had him come over one night, smoked some weed and drank a couple beers and had a long improv session, and Riley and Aaron hit it off really well.
I met Pauly when I got back into playing guitar because I joined his former band, Soblivios. We played together for a year or two, but then our other guitar player quit, so I quit, then Riley jammed with them (Soblivios) for a while, but we were also starting the infancy of LSDiablo, and we basically poached Pauly from Soblivios.
JESUSBONES 69: 6. Do you have a record label?
We are not currently on a label.
JESUSBONES 69: 7. What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available?
Well, I wouldn't use "whatever is available" if I don't have to, but I don't necessarily have any brand loyalty either. I play a Carvin LB70 bass for this project, but I also have a killer Hohner B-bass which is pretty fucking rad. I DO love the Carvin stuff for sure, but I also play an American made Washburn 7 string, A 1994 American made Fender Strat 40th anniversary edition, and a '92 Gibson Explorer I play in my Metallica tribute band, Blistered Earth.
I know Aaron and Riley like those Ibanez rg series guitars with the old school 80's Wizard necks. Riley also has a Music Man John Petrucci signature series, and Aaron's been playing an Epiphone Explorer too.
Pauly be playing those Tama drums with several different brands of cymbals.
JESUSBONES 69: 8. Do you have any upcoming shows?
Not at the moment, we've been experiencing some technical fuckniculties over the last few months, and have been on hiatus for some extra-curricular bullshit to get taken care of before we can move forward!
JESUSBONES 69: 9. Do you ever play any covers?
Not in this band so far, I wanted to do a bad-ass cover of Frankenstein by Edgar Winter, but these lame dicks would never take the time to learn it....fuckers.
JESUSBONES 69: 10. Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
We all write the music for our respective instruments so it's a collaboration primarily in that aspect, but typically the guitar players come up with most of the bodies of the songs. I write the majority of the lyrics with some collaboration with Aaron and Riley. A lot of times we'll come up with our own parts and figure out how to work them into whatever we're writing at the time. I've written guitar parts as well.
The main themes in our songs (at least on this first cd) are how we hate the way people are in general, hypocrisy, lies, fake bullshit. That kind of stuff. But we also like to write about partying, smoking weed, whatever. We like to have fun AND be serious at the same time, but we're not into just one or two things as songwriters. We like numerous different things, and will write about whatever we think we can make sound interesting to us AND the listener. The topics will always change because I can't personally write about one thing 20 different ways, I like a variety, and I like shit to vary!
JESUSBONES 69: 11. Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
It usually starts at home working on a riff. It used to be you could come to practice with one riff, but that started getting too hard to get anything flowing unless you wrote it specifically for a song that was already in the works. However, you really need to come to practice with two riffs that go together really well. That way you actually have a stem to work from, not just one rhythm. It helps to smoke some weed before you start writing (in my opinion) because most of the time you will be more creative, and come up with something less typical or more original sounding. Plus, I like smoking weed, yo.
It's rare that lyrics get written before the music is done, so usually we'll have the song done musically and go from there. Whatever we think we can make sound cool, and catchy, and still be able to sing and play at the same time. The three of us can (and do) sing a lot of different parts so that helps with vocal harmonies as well. Plus it helps when it comes to a lyric that may be too hard for one guy to sing and play, the other dude may have no problem.
JESUSBONES 69: 12. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
I'm not all that sure it has except for the drop tuning. I always hear these new bands (especially in Spokane) playing with these drop tunings, but let me tell you...Aaron is the MASTER! He plays all these different chord voicings that are still super heavy, but orchestral, at the same time.
It's like when a pianist plays a full chord you can hear all the voicings. That's what Aaron does, except with a guitar and distortion and it's fucking BAD-ASS!!! So now, we're all doing these huge super heavy chordal bullshit that rings through and allows you to achieve more emotion in your songwriting...even when that emotion is aggression.
JESUSBONES 69: 13. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
We are in the process of that challenge currently, with some personal stuff that I really don't care to mention here. I'll let you know if we make it through when we actually do, and tell you then.
The other challenge that I will mention is our practices are pretty volatile. We like to fight...fist fight. We get fucked up and start arguing and then the next thing you know we're out in the front yard at 3am swinging at each other. It's kind of rad actually, but nothing good ever really comes of it. At least we still love each other when it's all said and done.
JESUSBONES 69: 14. What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
Fuck, I don't know. Of course I'd LOVE Fame and Fortune, I'm just not sure how you would go about achieving it in this business anymore. Music is so fucking convoluted now with the internet and pro-tools recording software, any douchebag can put together some rad sounding shit in their basement. Can they do it live? Probably not, but how do you know unless you see them live? And how many times can you stomach going to see someone live because you love the music they have and then walk away disappointed because they couldn't pull it off, or they look stupid, or whatever. It's bullshit, but what can you do.
Basically, the ultimate direction for me in this band is to get back on our feet and start playing again, and when we're playing to straight up DOMINATE on stage by having the best stage presence, look the coolest, and recreate our music as close to perfect as possible. We also like to switch shit up so people aren't bored or the songs don't sound too much like each other. Nothin' worse than watching a band and you can't tell where one song ends and the other begins.
JESUSBONES 69: 15. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
Have fun motherfuckers!!! haha That's what kept me from even trying for 10 years after Forced Entry disbanded. Do you know how hard it is to find 3-5 guys that all like to play the same music, are all on the same level of proficiency at their instruments, look cool, even have enough gear to play live, have some money to put in the band, have good stage presence, actually can make it to practice every time, good songwriting skills, no bitchy girlfriends holding them back, and on and on and on.
It's a fucking nightmare, but can be totally worth it if you DO find the right guys. I've been super lucky in my music career and always found the right guys easily and quickly, but I've seen bands suffer through 4-5 bass players or whatever...it sucks!
JESUSBONES 69: 16. How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
We have a myspace, that I can't remember the login info cause I'm lame...our tunes are on there, but don't expect me to answer any friend requests or messages until I figure that shit out. We got some cd's up on ebay with the full packaging/lyrics etc. (so go buy them). you may have to look under Forced Entry 'cause that's what I listed them under. I'm trying to use my old shit to get people turned on to my new shit, right.
The myspace is www.myspace.com/lsdiablomusic
JESUSBONES 69: 17. Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Aw fuck, I could list quite a few that've helped me make it through life thus far, but as far as this band is concerned, the main contributors emotionally and financially are my Mom, Greg Smith, Rick Orlando, and Tammy Cloud! All of them fucking rock and were instrumental to any success we've been able to achieve up to now. Thanks guys. I love you all!
JESUSBONES 69: Thank’s bro’s
Thank you, Brother!!! Now send people out to go buy our shit!!!!!
